Workshops & Training

Drawing from behavioral psychology, brain science, restorative circles, and social contract theory, Citizen Discourse workshops help participants feel connected, think critically, and practice effective listening and conversation skills.

Our evidence-based methodology offers a conversation scaffolding and creates psychologically safe space for rich and restorative discussions.

The LBJ School of Public Affairs brought Citizen Discourse into our orientation because we wanted to take proactive steps to reduce polarization, increase respect and compassion on campus and build a stronger and more resilient community. The students were guided through sessions that helped them feel connected to the LBJ community, offered practical skills for navigating difficult discussions, and invited them to examine their own roles as global citizens. This is an effective and much needed training that will benefit students, staff, and faculty.

For fellow higher education administrators seeking a resource designed to foster inclusive culture, I highly recommend the Citizen Discourse program. Karen was a joy to work with and I look forward to future collaborations.

Citizen Discourse

Theories of Change

Growth Mindset

The understanding that abilities and intelligence can be developed.

Mindfulness

Through breath and intention we calm the nervous system, get present and invite introspection

Social Contract Theory

A community is more likely to build their desired culture when values and communication norms are explicit and members feel bought in

Restorative Circle

Cultivate a culture of belonging and ensure all are heard and respected

Expressive Writing

Writing clarifies feelings and experiences; promoting wellness and reducing stress and anxiety.

The Citizen Discourse workshop was the most effective training I have seen our UT students take part in. Our workshop was just days after Kobe Bryant’s death so we used the time to discuss legacy. The students were ready for more meaningful conversation and valued the time taken to deepen their connections with one another and practice being active listeners.
